Solana's Throughput Advantage Keeps Feeding Its Memecoin Liquidity Engine

Sub-cent fees and fast finality made Solana the default venue for high-frequency retail speculation — and that flow now underwrites a large share of on-chain DEX volume.

Teal and purple light trails on a night highway

Solana's core proposition has not changed: extremely low fees, fast finality and a monolithic execution environment where every application shares the same state. What changed is how much of global on-chain trading now happens there.

Memecoin launches remain the loudest expression of that. Launchpads produce thousands of new tokens per day, most worthless, but the aggregate flow keeps routers, market makers and aggregators unusually busy.

The serious side of the ecosystem grew alongside it. Perpetual venues, liquid staking, stablecoin payments and real-world asset issuance all benefit from the same block-space economics that make speculation cheap.

The persistent criticism is validator concentration and hardware requirements. Running a competitive validator remains expensive, which caps how decentralised the network can become relative to slower chains.

For traders, Solana's risk profile is concentrated in outages and congestion events rather than fee spikes. Track priority-fee levels: sustained elevated priority fees are the earliest sign that block space is genuinely scarce.

Solana sits near the top of the speed and cost columns in the RUECAT DEX blockchain rankings, with decentralisation as its weakest sub-score.

Key takeaways

  • Sub-cent fees keep Solana the default retail speculation venue
  • Memecoin flow underwrites a large share of DEX volume
  • Validator hardware cost remains the main decentralisation critique
