Sui Releases Testnet v1.80.1 Introducing Protocol 137 Upgrades

Mysten Labs has rolled out a new infrastructure update for its development network, publishing the Sui testnet upgrade version 1.80.1 to prepare validators and developers for Protocol 137. The release introduces architectural refinements across the Move execution environment, RPC layers, and archival services, according to a report by NewsBTC.

The update introduces several developer-facing performance improvements, notably optimizing cryptographic verification by making Ristretto255 range-proof execution more cost-effective while supporting larger transaction batch sizes. Additionally, the GraphQL subscription root has been shifted into the production schema, allowing node operators to test streamlined event streaming.

Mysten Labs highlighted that version 1.80.1 is strictly isolated to testnet environments, giving validator operators sufficient lead time to test system stability, data service synchronization, and package visibility rules before any mainnet deployment schedule is determined.

Infrastructure providers and dApp builders are now encouraged to test their node deployments against the Protocol 137 specifications. Feedback gathered during this testnet phase will govern the timeline for pushing these execution improvements to the live Sui mainnet.
