Download Phantom only from phantom.app or your device's official app store. Fake wallet extensions are one of the most common ways beginners lose everything. Create a new wallet and the app will show you a 12-word secret recovery phrase.
That phrase is your wallet. Anyone who reads it owns your funds forever, and nobody can restore it for you if you lose it.
Back up the seed phrase properly
Write the twelve words on paper or stamp them into metal, in order, and store the copy somewhere only you can reach. Never photograph it, never store it in a notes app, cloud drive, email draft or password manager sync, and never type it into any website. Consider two physical copies in two separate locations to survive fire or theft.
Fund the wallet
Send SOL from an exchange or an on-ramp to your Phantom address, always with a small test transfer first. Solana fees are tiny — usually a fraction of a cent — but every new token you hold creates a token account that locks about 0.002 SOL as rent, refundable when you close the account.
Keep a permanent SOL buffer. A wallet full of tokens but empty of SOL cannot sell anything.
Wallet hygiene from day one
Use separate wallets for separate jobs: a cold wallet for long-term holdings that never touches an unknown site, and a hot wallet with small balances for daily trading and airdrop hunting. Revoke old approvals periodically, and treat every unexpected NFT or token that appears in your wallet as bait — interacting with it is how many drains begin.
