How to analyze a crypto token before buying

A repeatable research framework: market cap versus FDV, liquidity depth, holder distribution, volume quality, narrative and catalysts.

Start with the numbers that cannot lie

Price alone means nothing. Market capitalisation β€” price multiplied by circulating supply β€” tells you what the market currently pays for the whole project. Fully diluted valuation uses total supply and shows what you are really buying if every token eventually unlocks. When FDV is many times market cap, future emissions are a permanent headwind on the price.

Liquidity is the second pillar. A token with a hundred-million valuation and forty thousand dollars of pool depth is not worth a hundred million; it is worth whatever the first serious seller can extract. Compare 24-hour volume to liquidity: healthy pairs turn over a meaningful multiple of their pool each day without extreme price impact.

Distribution and unlocks

Open the holder list. Exclude pool, burn and bridge addresses, then look at what remains. If ten wallets hold half the float, ten decisions control your investment. Check whether team and investor allocations are vested, when cliffs land, and how large each monthly unlock is relative to daily volume. An unlock worth ten days of volume is a scheduled avalanche.

Quality of volume and holders

Ask where the volume comes from. Growing unique buyer counts, rising holder totals and organic social mentions indicate real demand. Flat holders with soaring volume indicate bots. On RUECAT DEX the Momentum engine blends volume, price action and activity signals precisely to surface the first pattern rather than the second.

The qualitative half

Numbers tell you the risk; narrative tells you the upside. What problem does the project solve, or what emotion does the meme capture? Who else is in the same category, and is this token cheap or expensive against those peers? Is the team shipping, and can you verify that in a public repository or on-chain activity rather than in a roadmap picture?

Finally, write down your thesis and your invalidation before buying: what you expect to happen, by when, and what would prove you wrong. A thesis you cannot invalidate is not analysis, it is hope.

A ten-minute checklist

Run this before any purchase; if two or more answers are bad, skip the trade.

  • Market cap, FDV and the ratio between them.
  • Liquidity depth and price impact for the size you intend to trade.
  • Top-holder concentration and unlock calendar.
  • Volume trend versus holder trend over seven days.
  • Contract safety: mint and freeze authority, verification, taxes.
  • Narrative, competitors and a dated catalyst.
  • Your invalidation level and position size.

FAQ

What FDV to market cap ratio is acceptable?

There is no universal number, but the closer to one, the fewer future sellers exist. Ratios above three deserve a hard look at the unlock schedule.

How much liquidity is enough?

Enough that your intended exit size moves price by less than one or two percent. Work backwards from your position, not from a fixed threshold.
